Dr. Ashraf Sobhi: The National Planning Institute is the scientific and economic advisor to the Ministry of Youth and Sports
Dr. Ashraf Al-Arabi: The study aims to provide a framework for measuring the contribution of sports to GDP and provide accurate data to support sports policies and the development of this important industry.
In this context, Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, Minister of Youth and Sports, explained that sport is not an economic activity, but rather a powerful tool to achieve development goals. He expressed his happiness to launch the first sub-account for sport among the countries of the Arab region, and praised the great role of the National Planning Institute in preparing this study, declaring that the National Planning Institute is the scientific and economic advisor to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, thanks to its cadres and solid scientific expertise, in the presence of Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, Minister of Youth and Sports.
For his part, Dr. Ashraf El-Araby pointed out that the project to build sub-accounts for sports in Egypt was carried out in cooperation between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Planning Institute with the support and participation of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, explaining that this study aims to provide a framework to measure the contribution of sports to GDP and provide accurate data to support sports policies and achieve sustainable development. He noted that this calculation contributes to enhancing the understanding of the role of sports in the economy, by supporting evidence-based decision-making to improve the management of the sports sector and increase investments in it.
Al-Araby explained that the study was based on a clear scientific methodology consistent with the methods used in recognized international experiences to build a sub-account for sports in Egypt, showing its contribution to the national economy at the macro and sectoral levels, enabling officials and decision-makers to manage sports activity efficiently and achieve the best possible returns from sports investments.
The study concluded with a set of recommendations, including: The need to work on developing and standardizing data collection methods and conducting related surveys, to ensure the provision of as much data as possible to build, develop and improve the contribution of sports to the Egyptian economy, with attention to continuous evaluation of the economic impact of various sports activities and events.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Ashraf Salah El-Din, Vice President of the National Planning Institute for Training, Consultancy and Community Service, Dr. Suheir Abou El-Enein, Professor of Economics at the Institute and the main researcher of the study, Dr. Yehia Hussein, Assistant Professor and Head of the Scientific Activities Unit, Dr. Fatima El-Hamlaoui, Economics Instructor, Ms. Aya El-Sersi, and Ms. Eman Abbas from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).
The Ministry of Youth and Sports was also present: Major General Ismail El Far, Assistant Minister for Youth and Government Relations, and Dr. Essam Serageldin, Assistant Minister for Marketing and Investment. Dr. Mostafa Magdy, Assistant Minister for Strategic Affairs and Information. Dr. Abdullah Al-Bahar, Assistant Minister for Marketing and Investment. Dr. Tamer Abdel Azim, Director General of Sports Talent Programs. Dr. Abdullah Al-Farmawi is a member of the Investment Committee.It is worth mentioning that a joint cooperation agreement was previously signed between the institute and the Ministry of Youth and Sports on building the sports sub-account in Egypt to show the contribution of the sports sector to the Egyptian GDP
