It was established in 1960 to play a pivotal role in supporting planners, decision makers, public policy makers, and sectors of the state and society with visions and appropriate developmental alternatives in all areas of planning and development.<br>The recent legislative development of the institute\u2019s law in 2015 contributed to opening new horizons for the institute\u2019s developmental and societal roles, especially in the launch of the United Nations Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030 \u2013 SDGs, and the launch of the Sustainable Development Strategy: Egypt\u2019s Vision 2030 \u2013 SDS, which enshrined the role of the institute in the advancement of research and studies. Related to the preparation of development plans for the state and the means of their implementation, and the study of the scientific foundations and methods of planning and development, in addition to spreading awareness and knowledge of planning and development issues and their scientific and applied foundations.<br>The institute has strengthened its developmental role in recent years in cooperation with the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, as the research arm of the ministry, by participating with the ministry in many joint projects that contributed to offering scientific and practical research alternatives in dealing with some development issues and crises. It also contributed to providing training programs. To develop and build the capacities of staff in planning and follow-up departments in government agencies, in addition to organizing many international conferences, scientific seminars and workshops on issues of planning and sustainable development.<br>The Institute&#8217;s responsibility doubles in the next stage through its active participation with all partners at the local, regional and international levels in dealing with the risks and crises facing development locally, regionally and globally, and strengthening the capabilities of anticipation and foresight in the country to deal with these risks using the best scientific methods and tools. The Institute&#8217;s responsibilities are also multiplied in employing recent developments in modeling and big data analyzes and emerging technologies to support the planner, decision maker, and plan and policy makers in the government sector, the business sector, and the private sector.
